PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
01. the BODY LANGUAGE assignment
an assignment on use of a specif layer [ the body ] and an ëexpress yourselfí task
* designing a T-shirt for your own body
Bring your most favorite ënovelí, one that is extremely special to you, one in which you identify yourself with a main character. One that holds a chapter or (a few) paragraph(s) that could be your lifeís motto. [ Mine is J.D.Salingerís ëCatcher in the Ryeí with the teenangst ridden Holden Caulfield; since written a blue print for loads of contemporary writers as Douglas Coupland, Chuck Pahlunuik, Michael Cunningham etc. ]
Is there a part in that book, a piece of text (or a few), that you find so fitting it should be ëwritten on your bodyí?
Use text(parts) from a novel and design a typographical t-shirt with it!
Shirt also must contain ë Title of the bookí / writer / publishing date / image of cover!
Be carefull!
- make sure the text (and the novel) is IMPORTANT to you! When on your body, it will be absolutely connected to your persona.
- the body as a layer for typography should be well researched; do we use ëhiddení areas as underneath arms, the neckline, the shoulder-part, the chest-part etc.
- do we use sensuality in combination with contents... and what do we want with the viewer who is gonna read all that.
* who is the student, what is his/her life motto.
* studying the historical view on printed t-shirts, starting with Katherine Hamnettís political statements throughout commercial use and personal believes.
* typography and text-editing skills
* and, very importantly, the use of your body as a way of expressing yourself.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 02. the PAINTINGAPICTURE assignment an assignment on ways of looking at contemporary photography finding the ëTHOUSAND WORDSí to describe a photo and borrowing itís composition for typographical exercises.
* making a typographical essay about a specific photograph containing info and analyses of the image, the maker, the occasion!
The brief is about ëlookingí, observing and the proces of meaning-givingí.
Knowledge on basic principles of analysing through semiotics is necessary - students will be introduced to anylising tools of semiotics.
The student is asked to bring a photograph of choice by a comtemporary artist/photoprapher. It is very important that this image has become a ëclassicí and is known by many. Through researching and analysing the photo, students have to build a textual context around the image and present the results and designs in magazine-form.
They are asked to describe the image in a few different ways:
The first one is simply based on what is visible on the image (the facts in semiotics called ësignsí) in text, color schemes and ësymbolsí - turning the image into an infographic.
The second way is a more descriptive way (in semiotics denotation), mostly combined to things we feel and how we interprete given ësignsí.
The third way is describing things based on opinions and values (in semiotics conotation).
All these produced texts need to be presented in typographic exercises with the composition of the image in mind, so the position of the ëobjectsí in the image could be replaced by typography.
This will lead to interesting compositions in typography that in a later stadium can be literally layered. In the end we see a typhographical interpretation of the image, purely existing of type.
Aims: * most importantly it enhances the studentís writing skills, from being very precise to being very personal in interpretation based on analysing-principles.
* developing ways of looking, doing research on ëwhení/íwhyí this image has been made.
* using typography skills
* making a magazine
Make sure your research and designproces are visualised in the end, they need to be compiled in a magazine!
* lecture on a series on ëimportí images troughout the years - whl
* Jocelyn Moorhouseís ëPROOFí must be viewed! - about a blind photographer who uses viewers to describe his pictures he makes to him. Very important in language-use of ëdescribingí!
