May I Hear That Word In a Sentence, Please? is an investigation of language as a function of a shared social experience, that of popular film. The project aims to contextualize the process of generating meaning by isolating the sign, or word, from that which gives it meaning, a sentence. Through this gesture the goal is to renew focus on how cultural capital is involved in creating meaning within the larger circuit of culture. This act manifests itself as a durational video composed of appropriated film scenes structured as a lexicon, playing a scene to provide context for every word uttered within the specific canon of film.
