Navigation Concept to browse and visualize online more than 1 million collectibles and 1 million coins of the vast Habsburg collection.

The systematic indexing and cataloging process for an online representation of the whole Habsburg collection has been one of the largest online archiving endeavors in Europe in 1999. The challenge was to develop an alternative navigational model with is intuitively capable of browsing a million and more items. As a compromise between too ‘deep’ and ‘wide’ navigation models, the suggested solution consisted of two-dimensional solution suggesting the metaphors of book spines in different scales. Those can be zoomed in and approached to narrow down the selection to a specific category, while dynamically showing deeper levels within the chosen category. Proximities between the vertical suggest proximity in terms of content, allowing for intuitive and individual paths through the data. The project was realized using Adobe Flash 2.0, which introduced ActionScript for the first time.
