Whitney Frauenbank WiFi network, .YU domain, women's cooperative, blockchain, 2017.

The server located in the mirror tower hosts Frauenbank (2017), a blockchain smart contract named after the first women owned and operated banking cooperative from 1910 Berlin. Frauenbank is structured as a decentralized autonomous organization on the global Ethereum network, where operations are recorded and verified in a public ledger called the blockchain. By joining the ‘Whitney Frauenbank’ .YU network and using the Frauenbank app, female-identified visitors are guided through the process of acquiring membership and taking part in the future of the cooperative. The immutable peer-to-peer contract equalizes power within Frauenbank where each member claims one vote regardless of the number of shares held. At the Whitney Museum, contributed financial assets are put towards the purchase of Serbian land, owing to a 2017 law permitting foreign acquisition of public and private real estate. Frauenbank generates a cooperative space and a new kind property that is neither private nor public, grounded in former Yugoslavia’s digital and physical domain.
